While I was in Holland (the Netherlands) I helped to celebrate May 5th, the day Holland was freed from the occupation by the Nazis in 1945. This first picture shows some of the celebrations. This shows a market and midway as seen from the top window of a windmill decorated in red, white and blue flags.
Some Dutch people still wear wooden shoes. I watched an artisan carve a wooden shoe by hand from a chunk of wood.
What skill he showed. The last picture shows a young boy of about 12 wearing wooden shoes in the garden. You can tell he uses them a lot. He said they are warm and dry and handy to get in and out of because
there are no shoelaces.
So true.
